Descriptionportrait of man in a dark indoor scene, frontally posed with head looking towards his right, right fist rested on right knee, left elbow resting on ornate wooden table, wearing long velvet coat, printed waistcoat and white ruffled shirt visible beneath, open books and scrolls bottom right corner

Francis Russell was the son of John, 4th Duke of Bedford. He made the Grand Tour in 1761-62, purchasing paintings from the Barberini collection. He died in a hunting accident at the age of 28.
In this portrait by Reynolds, a bronze statuette of Samson and the Philistine is visible on the table. A grisaille drawing of a classical battle scene in an oval frame is propped against the table. Reynolds seems to have referred to this print by Watson of this painting in 1764 as "Lord Tavistocks Print", reflecting Reynolds' close involvement with the creation of prints after his paintings.
This is a rare proof state, before the inscription was added.
