James Barry was a self-taught Irish artist. The statesman Edmund Burke became his patron and sponsored his studies in France and Italy. Barry was best known for his neoclassical historical works and for his devotion to high art. A major commission was the decoration of the great room of the Society of Arts from 1777 to 1783. He was a proferssor of painting at the Royal Academy from 1782-99 but left on bad terms.
